About the artist

Charles Houben was born in Brussels and painted in an impressionistic style. He studied in Liège. He painted Flanders and the far north of Europe, France with Oise and Seine, Italy with Venice, Tunisia and Morocco. After his death in 1931 there has only been one exhibition, the retrospective of his work in Brussels from 16 to 29 January 1932. In that sense you can state that the painter received appreciation only later. In 2012 there was an exhibition with Pierre Bonnard, Marc Chagall, Maurice Denis, Amedeo Modigliani, Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso in Metz at the Center Pompidou-Metz. Today, various works by Houben belong to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Museum of Fine Arts of Liège. That way they get the attention they deserve.
