About the artist

Edward Clark Churchill Mace was born in Leicester, England in 1863. He emigrated to Australia at the age of eighteen, where he made a fortune from mining. In 1901, he came to Cape Town. There, he served on the British side in the Anglo-Boer War. After that, he turned to painting full-time. Mace is mostly famous for his landscapes of South-Africa and of Kaap de Goede Hoop. In 1924, he had a stroke, making him unable to paint. Four years later, he committed suicide. He has been described as a ‘rare student of nature in her softer moods’.
