About the artist

Giovanni was the son of Jacopo Bellini, referred to as one of the founders of Renaissance painting in northern Italy. The Bellini family lived in Venice, where Giovanni became one of the most highly regarded painters of the High Renaissance and inspired generations of painters to come, including his pupils Giorgione and Titian. Giobanni’s brother, Gentile, was also a famous painter. Bellini revolutionized Venetian painting through using slow-drying oil paints instead of tempera, thus intensifying the colours and creating more atmospheric scenes. Aside from devotional painting, he also specialized in mythological painting and secular allegories later in his life.
