About the artist

Johannes Engel Masurel was Dutch painter. He studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He was a pupil of Jacobus Schoemaker Doyer. He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae (Arti, Amsterdam). During a long time he shared a studio with Ebersbach, Johan Daniƫl Ebersbach. His worked mostly in oil paint.
In 1947 he was mentioned in a Dutch book by C. Bille, as 'J.E. Masurel, een vrijwel onbekend Amsterdamsch schilder uit de 19de eeuw' (see Oud-Holland 62 (1947), p. 86-91), meaning 'J.E. Masurel, a unknown Amsterdam painter from the 19th century. Nowadays his works, mostly still lifes, are highly appreciated.
