About the artist

Joseph Charles Tilson is an English pop art painter, sculptor and printmaker, tied to the Pop Art scene. Tilson was born on August 24, 1928 in London. He served in the Royal Air Force between 1946-49, after which he applied to the St Marin’s School of Art in London (1949-52) and the Royal College of Art (1952-55).

During the 1960s Tilson became strongly associated with the upcoming British Pop Art movement. He first produced wooden reliefs and constructions, prints and paintings, but he later began to use a wider variety of materials such as stone, straw and rope.

Tilson’s work has been exhibited throughout the world and he is currently represented by Marlborough Fine Art, London and Alan Cristea Gallery, London.
