About the artist

Ceramist Kaat Pauwels (1968) was born in Gent, Belgium, where she also studied at the Sint-Lucas Institute of Fine Arts. Her oeuvre is mostly based on two traditional forms, namely the vase and the bowl. She uses only clay and builds her pieces up in several layers, referring to this technique as ‘coiling’. Whilst she does prepare by making sketches and looking closely to nature, her work is often the result of a spontaneous process in which she follows the material’s natural flow. Her bowls and vases are for the most part softly tinted and their shapes reminiscent of flowers and plants, rock formations and other earthly delights.
