About the artist

Stefan Gierowski is a Polish painter, born in Częstochowa on 21 May 1925. From 1945 to 1948 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and he also was an art history student at the Jagiellonian University, under the supervision of Vojeslav Molè. He moved to Warsaw in 1949 and became an educator at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1962 and 1996. In the 1980s he associated with the “independent culture” circles. In 1981, he was a member of the Organising Committee of the Congress of Polish Culture. In 1980, he was the recipient of the Jan Cybis Award. He currently lives in Konstancin, near Warsaw. Since the 1950s Gierowski has been creating abstract paintings, in which he explores the dual nature of light. His paintings are shown in major galleries in Europe, the United States and many countries throughout the world.
