About the artist

Theodorus, or Theo, Hanrath was born in Amsterdam, September 22, 1853. From 1865 until 1870 Hanrath was apprenticed by Amsterdam genre and portrait painter Johannis Hendrik Veldhuijzen. His teacher would turn out to be a major influence in Hanrath's later work. In 1878 he followed a course at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium, where he studied together with befriended paitners Hein Kever and Karel Verlat. After the course, which he finished in one winter, he returned to Amsterdam. He specialized in painting still lifes, landscapes and genre scenes; an example being that of peasant girls working in a field. Hanrath passed away in 1883, not even thirty years of age. One of his paintings can be found in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
