  • About the artwork
Memories and emotions from the past come together and form the present. Waves of experiences that continuously deliver a new essence and visualization. How the world is seen, but also how the world sees you. Sometimes transparent, sometimes reflective, with tension, closed, but always layered—multiple levels of awareness.

Yoshiko Okada’s artworks are characterized by their emotional depth. Her Japanese background can be clearly seen and felt. Combined with European influences and memories, she is able to evoke tensions and reflections that recur in her works. But the absolute refinement, tranquillity and harmony create a synergy that produces true worldwide recognized masterpieces.

‘Distance between (II)’ is a kiln cast and made of optical glass. The images on the glass are sandblasted. The yellow-orange pattern gives the image a varied effect and is reminiscent of the rising Japanese sun. Together with the light and the viewing angle, reflections are created in and around the image, which gives a continuously different experience. The edition is 4, of which 1 is an artist’s copy.
  • About the artist
Yoshiko Okada was born in Tokyo in Japan in 1972. From 1990-92 she studied clothing and kimono design at Seitoku Technical college in Japan, before coming to the UK in 1995. After a prolonged education studying engraving and stained glass, Yoshiko graduated in three-dimensional design and glass from The Surrey Institute of Art and Design in 2004. Yoshiko works from her studio in London and works primarily with kiln formed glass, using simple forms symbolically related to the piece, often with small jewel-like elements. Her inspiration is drawn from her own Japanese background in conjunction with her personal experience of western culture. A personal narrative runs through her work.

'My work continues to explore a Japanese background and experiences, and my current English and European situation.  It explores the synergy and paradoxes these different influences create when patched together into an identity, lifestyle and consciousness. I have been working with kiln cast glass concentrating on forms of simplicity.'
