- About the artist
Dirk Roseport's images refer in a contemporary way to a romantic tradition in painting; the artist-photographer turns his back on the turbulent context of the 21st century. He withdraws into the vastness of nature and distances himself from time.
There is only the light, the horizon and the ever-moving water. Perception is distilled down to its essence. What we see, however, is much more.
The conscious central positioning of the horizon(-real line), elementary part in the composition of many of the works shown, structures and at the same time frees us from any form of hierarchy and convention within photography and the way of looking at it. Subtle shades of colour and hue distinguish sea from sky and vice versa, and abstract the transition between the two.
Roseport's images breathe a penetrating and stillness, are layered and intriguing. They invite us to repeatedly look and discover, to take the time to explore layer after layer and thus to find a peace that we so often lack today.
Transcendental Tranquility balances in its subject, layers and effect on the interface between photography and painting. Techniques of alienation, repetition and motion blur create a twilight zone that leaves room for reflection and interpretation.
In times of ubiquitous image manipulation, Roseport swears by the authenticity of unedited images. What we see is what he registers with the camera at the moment of the shooting.
Transcendental Tranquility is printed on Hahnemühle archival quality paper, a 100% cotton-based paper with an extremely silky matte surface texture for impressive density, colour range and depth.
