  • About the artist

Anneke Wilbrink is no stranger to the Dutch art world. After nominations for the Prix de Rome and the Koninklijke Prijs voor de Vrije Schilderkunst, she won the latter in 2006. Her paintings show a build-up in various layers of colour fields, lines, structures and forms. They often refer to landscapes and metropolitan architecture. Wilbrink regularly exhibits her work in her galleries in Utrecht (Sanaa), and Sol Art Gallery, in Dublin Ireland.

In the paintings of Anneke Wilbrink, it seems as if the world has entered a particle accelerator. Futuristic landscapes are filled with skyscrapers, psychedelic flowers and trees placed against a background of blue skies and rock massifs. Her worlds evoke recognition, with for instance the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam and the Nieuwe Toren in Kampen (the town where she did the academy), which immediately afterwards dissolves into the visual spectacle of what else is there.

Anneke Wilbrink is absolutely indebted to the Italian Futurists. Speed, energy, powerful lines and technology tumble over each other in the same composition. She is a painter pur sang and searches in every canvas for the balance between material, composition and colour. It is powerful, pure painting, disguised as science fiction. Her work urges you to realise how beautiful the world is and how important it is to maintain it. Wilbrink herself says that her work is 'a protest song', 'but without the sermon'. The dynamic landscapes are composed like a collage, often full and busy like daily life itself.
