• Sobre el artista
  Antonij (Anton) Mauve (1838-1888) nació en Zaandam. A los 16 años, fue a Haarlem, donde fue aprendiz de Pieter Frederik van Os, un especialista en pintura de ganado, seguido de Wouter Verschuur, quien pintó caballos. Mauve y Paul Gabriel iban a menudo al campo para pintar de la naturaleza. A los veinte años comenzó a visitar Oosterbeek, un pueblo que atraía a muchos artistas. En 1871, tomó un estudio en La Haya. Durante un tiempo, enseñó a Vincent van Gogh, con quien estaba relacionado por matrimonio. En 1882, Mauve comenzó a visitar Laren durante el verano, y finalmente se mudó allí en 1885. En ese momento, su trabajo era ampliamente conocido y buscado por coleccionistas en Holanda y en el extranjero. Sus paisajes con ovejas fueron especialmente populares en América; Curiosamente, se hizo una distinción entre "ovejas que vienen" y "ovejas que se van", un poco menos costoso. Los paisajes evocadores de Mauve lo ubican firmemente en la Escuela de La Haya.
