  Extra information: Cartier - A leading French jewelry firm, founded in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier (1819-1904).
  
  Its headquarters are in Paris, with branches in several major centres. The founder was joined in 1872 by his son Alfred (1836-1925), and the latter, with his eldest son, Louis (1875-1942), moved the Paris business in 1898 to its present address, 13 Ruede la Paix.
  
  In 1902 Alfred's second son, Pierre (1878-1964), opened a branch in London and in 1903 in New York City. In 1909 the London branch was taken over by-the youngest brother Jacques (1885-1942), by which time it had moved to its present address at 175 NewBond St.
  
  A group headed by Robert Hocq (1917-79)acquired from the Cartier family the branches in Paris (1972), London (1974), and New York (1976). Hocq was Managing Director until his death when he was succeeded by his daughter, Nathalie (b. 1951),who since 1974had headed the high-fashion jewelry department and promoted the boutique collection of jewelry known as Les Musts'.

  Cartier a été fondée en 1847 par le joaillier Louis-François Cartier, au moment où il a repris l'atelier de son mentor. Son fils Alfred Cartier suivit les traces de son père en 1874 et plus tard, en 1899, l'entreprise fut reprise par les propres fils d'Alfred: Louis, Pierre et Jacques. Ces noms finiraient par aboutir à la renommée mondiale à laquelle la marque est associée aujourd'hui, grâce à l'invention de la première montre à être portée au poignet. Au début du XXe siècle, Cartier a lancé certains de ses modèles de montres les plus renommés encore vendus aujourd'hui, comme la Baignoire et la Tortue en 1912. En 1914, Cartier a utilisé pour la première fois le symbole de la panthère (il le fait encore aujourd'hui). Une édition d'une montre imitant les taches et les points de la fourrure d'une panthère a été conçue spécialement à cet effet, par la créatrice charleroiaise Jeanne Toussaint (1887). Après cela, le symbole de la panthère a commencé à apparaître sur plus d'objets, comme des poudres, des cigarettes et des boîtes à bijoux. On dit que la panthère est utilisée comme représentation de la femme comme objet de désir. Jusqu'en 1964, l'entreprise est restée aux mains de la famille Cartier. L'établissement parisien de la société a été repris par un certain nombre d'investisseurs en 1972. Au cours des années suivantes, de plus en plus de bureaux ont commencé à apparaître, et d'autres bijoutiers et horlogers ont été repris en plus de cela. Une fondation d'art privée a été créée: la Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain. En 1993, Cartier se retrouve en partenariat avec un grand groupe de marques de mode, telles que Piaget, Karl Lagerfeld et Hackett. Depuis 2012, Cartier appartient à la holding Richemont et au sud-africain Johann Rupert. La liste des célébrités qui ont porté des bijoux de Cartier est interminable; La grande duchesse Maria Pavlovna de Russie, la reine belge Elizabeth, la reine Victoria Eugenia d'Espagne et le roi anglais Édouard VII peuvent être inclus. Grace Kelly est connue pour avoir porté régulièrement des bijoux Cartier et lorsque Katherine Middleton a épousé le prince William, elle portait également un diadème spécialement conçu par Cartier.
