Johannes Marius (Jan) ten Kate (1859-1896) - Beach scenes

Ten Kate came from an artist family. He was the son of the romantic artist Mari ten Kate, from whom he probably also learned the trade. In 1881 he made a study trip to Paris, where he came under the influence of Impressionism. He also visited London. From 1874 he lived and worked in The Hague. He is usually also counted among the Hague School, although he never denied his romantic roots. His choice of themes was varied, with a certain emphasis on beach scenes, landscapes and genre pieces. Ten Kate was a member of the Hague artist's club Pulchri Studio. He died in 1896 at the age of 36. His work is in the collection of the Gemeentemuseum The Hague.
