- Sur l'artisteJulius Jacobus van de Sande Bakhuyzen was a Dutch painter and etcher, born in The Hague on 18 June 1835. He died in The Hague on 21 October 1925. Van de Sande Bakhuyzen, the son of the painter Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen, took his first lessons in drawing and painting from his father. He studied at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague. In 1871, his work “Vijver in het Haagse bos” was awarded a royal medal. From 1875 he usually lived in Drenthe during the summer, along with his sister Gerardine. He can be counted as one of the Hague School painters. Van de Sande Bakhuyzen was a painter of landscapes. He was a member of the art societies Arti et Amicitiae (Amsterdam) and Pulchri Studio (The Hague). He was a co-founder of a society of etchers in Pulchri Studio.
