Keller was 'professor of sculpture' at the Glasgow School of Art in 1898.
Born in the Hague, the success of his father's novels enabled him to study in Amsterdam and Brussels under Professor Allebé and Charles Van de Stappen.
He travelled widely in Italy and he settled briefly in Paris where he worked for a waxworks and exhibited at the Salon in 1896. Two years later Keller moved to Glasgow, where he was a key exponent of the Glasgow Style. He was invited to became 'teacher of sculpture' at the Glasgow School of Art in 1898 . From 1900-1910 he was ‘professor of modelling’ at the same School.
Later he returned to Holland where he spent the latter part of his life.
Johan Keller était un artiste hollandais né à La Haye, en 1863, dans une famille d'écrivain. Quand on a demandé à ses parents de le sortir de l'école parce qu'il perdait ses études à griffonner en classe. Le succès des romans de son père a été la raison pour laquelle Keller a pu étudier l'art à Amsterdam et à Bruxelles, et voyager également en Italie et en France. Les œuvres antérieures de Keller comprennent une statue en grès pour le musée Booijmans à Rotterdam. Il accepte un poste d'enseignant à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Glasgow et se voit confier le plan de décoration de nombreux bâtiments d'architectes célèbres. Keller a vécu aux Pays-Bas les dernières années de sa vie et est décédé en 1944.
