Over de kunstenaar

Bramante was an Italian architect, sculptor, graphic artist and fresco painter. He was born in 1444 in Monte Asdrualdo and died in 1514 in Rome. Around 1474, Bramante moved to Milan. There, he built several churches in the new Antique style. The Duke, Ludovico Sforza, made him virtually his court architect. In 1499, Bramante moved to Rome after his patron was driven from Milan by an invading French army. He introduced Renaissance architecture to Milan and the High Renaissance style to Rome, where his plan for St. Peter’s Basilica formed the basis of design executed by Michelangelo. Under the patronage of Pope Julius II, he and artists like Michelangelo and Raphael renewed the artistic greatness appropriate to Rome as heir to the Roman Empire. Much of his life was also devoted to fine art painting; his subjects were Christian religious scenes, historical scenes and portraits. He was the teacher of Cesare di Lorenzo Cesariano and influenced Sebastiano Serlio and Francesco Binasco.
