Over de kunstenaar

Karel van Mander was a Flemish print artist, (fresco) painter, draftsman and artist’s biographer. Born in Meulebeke, in the County of Flanders, he established himself in the Netherlands in the latter part of his life. He studied under Lucas de Heere and Pieter Vlerick and wrote religious plays for which he also painted the scenery. He was active in Rome and Vienna, Italy, from 1574 to 1577. Van Mander is mainly remembered as a biographer of Early Netherlandish painters and Northern Renaissance artists in his Schilder-boeck. As an artist and art theoretician he played a significant role in the spread and development of Northern Mannerism in the Dutch Republic. Styles largely derived from Italian Mannerism were found in the Netherlands and elsewhere from around the mid-century. In 1585 he showed his friend Hendrick Goltzius drawings by Bartholomeus Spranger, who was the leading artist of Northern Mannerism. Van Mander together with Goltzius and Cornelis van Haarlem became known as the Haarlem Mannerists and artists from other towns joined their movement. They strived for artful ingenuity rather than naturalism. Van Mander was the master of Frans Hals and specialised in historical genre scenes, Christian religious scenes, portraits, landscapes and flower pieces. He died in Amsterdam in 1606.
