  Antonij (Anton) Mauve (1838-1888) nasceu em Zaandam. Aos 16 anos foi para Haarlem onde foi aprendiz de Pieter Frederik van Os, especialista em pintura de gado, seguido de Wouter Verschuur que pintava cavalos. Mauve e Paul Gabriel costumavam ir ao campo para pintar da natureza. Aos vinte, ele começou a visitar Oosterbeek, uma vila que atraiu muitos artistas. Em 1871, ele alugou um estúdio em Haia. Por um tempo, ele ensinou Vincent van Gogh, com quem era parente do casamento. Em 1882, Mauve começou a visitar Laren no verão, mudando-se para lá em 1885. Nessa época, seu trabalho era amplamente conhecido e procurado por colecionadores na Holanda e no exterior. Suas paisagens com ovelhas eram especialmente populares na América; curiosamente, foi feita uma distinção entre 'ovelhas que vêm' e a um pouco mais barata 'ovelhas que vão'. As paisagens evocativas de Mauve o colocam firmemente na Escola de Haia.
