Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney created this design for the Titanic monument in 1915. A marble version of this head is on display at the Whitney Museum in New York. Gertrude portrayed her beloved brother Alfred here, who died on the RMS Lusitania in May 1915. The Lusitania was torpedoed by a German submarine. His death was a hero's death because he gave up his place in the lifeboat and life jacket to a mother with child.
