  • About the artist

Jerzy Jędrysiak (born 1954, Zakopane, Poland) is a world-renowned Polish graphic artist and professor, celebrated for his exceptional mastery of the linocut technique. His work is instantly recognizable for its intricate detail and powerful contrast, earning him the reputation of a “painter who has given up color.”

Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Jędrysiak developed a strong foundation in graphic arts, eventually dedicating himself almost entirely to linocut. Over the course of his career, he has refined this medium to an extraordinary level, transforming what is often considered a simple printmaking technique into a vehicle for highly complex and expressive compositions.

Working exclusively in black and white, Jędrysiak constructs richly layered images that explore themes of nature, mythology, architecture, and the human condition. His prints are characterized by meticulous line work, rhythmic patterns, and a near-architectural sense of structure. Through the interplay of light and shadow, he achieves a depth and dynamism that rivals painting, despite the absence of color.

His artistic philosophy embraces limitation as a source of strength. By deliberately restricting his palette, Jędrysiak focuses attention on form, contrast, and composition. The result is a body of work that is both visually striking and intellectually engaging, inviting viewers to explore intricate visual narratives embedded within each print.

In addition to his artistic practice, Jędrysiak has had a significant academic career, mentoring generations of artists and contributing to the continued development of graphic arts in Poland and beyond. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in numerous public and private collections.

Today, Jerzy Jędrysiak is regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary printmaking—a master of linocut whose disciplined approach and unmistakable visual language continue to push the boundaries of black-and-white graphic art.
