  • About the artist

Włodzimierz Kotkowski (1942–2011) was a prominent Polish artist and printmaker who gained recognition primarily for his refined and technically sophisticated printmaking. Born in Poland during the turbulent years of World War II, he grew up in a period of political and cultural reconstruction, which had a lasting influence on his artistic development.

Kotkowski specialized in graphic techniques such as etching, aquatint, and lithography, in which he combined exceptional mastery with a strong sense of composition and atmosphere. His work is characterized by a subtle interplay of light and shadow, layered structures, and an often introspective, sometimes melancholic undertone. In his prints, he explored themes such as memory, time, and human vulnerability, in which figurative elements frequently merge with more abstract forms.

Within the Polish graphic tradition—which is internationally known for its high level of craftsmanship and expressive power—Kotkowski held a respected position. His work was exhibited both in Poland and abroad and is part of various public and private collections. He was appreciated for his ability to combine classical techniques with a contemporary visual language, without compromising on substantive depth.

In addition to his work as an artist, Kotkowski was also involved in passing on knowledge and craftsmanship within the graphic arts, thereby contributing to the next generation of artists.

With his consistent and understated oeuvre, Włodzimierz Kotkowski left behind a recognizable and meaningful artistic legacy within European printmaking.
