About the artist
Alphonse van Beurden was a Belgian sculptor, born in Antwerp on 23 April 1854. He died on 21 September 1938. He studied under Joseph Geefs and Eduard Dujardin at the art academy in Antwerp.Van Beurden designed the caryatid and allegorical sculptures on the façade of the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In the United Kingdom, he is renowned for his ivory sculptures. Between 1887 and 1904 he exhibited thirteen times at the Royal Academy of Art.
