    Pedersen studied at the royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and afterwards spent twelve years travelling in Southeast and South Asia, painting portraits of all the different peoples he met; Indians, Sri Lankans, Malay, Arabs, Thai, Indonesians and Chinese.

    Von Pedersen ha studiato all'Accademia delle Arti di Copenaghen prima di viaggiare prima in Germania e poi a Londra, dove ha incontrato suo fratello maggiore che lavorava in una piantagione di tabacco a Sumatra. Lì decise nel 1898 di visitare suo fratello a Sumatra dove arrivò dopo una breve sosta nello Sri Lanka. Da lì ha viaggiato e dipinto a Penang, Singapore, Giava e Siam. Sulla via del ritorno in Danimarca si fermò a Bombay dove dipinse il ritratto del Maharadja di Burdwan. Von Pedersen trascorse vent'anni nel sud e sud est asiatico, dipingendo ritratti di tutti i diversi popoli del sud est asiatico; Indiani, srilankesi, malesi, arabi, thailandesi, indonesiani e cinesi. Dipinse anche antichi templi, paesaggi, in particolare vulcani e paesaggi urbani dei molti luoghi diversi che visitò in Asia.
