Baha’ al Din ibn Shaddad (1145, Mosul – 1235, Aleppo), full name Abu-al-Mahasin Yusuf ibn Rafi’ ibn Shaddad Baha’ al-Din (Arabic: )بهاء الدين ابن شداد , was an Arab writer and statesman. In 1188 he entered the service of Saladin after pilgrimaging to Mecca. Saladin (1138-1193) is known in the East as the ruler who united Egypt, Syria, Palestine and Mesopotamia into a single Muslim empire. Baha’ al-Din presented Saladin, who was
waging war against the Christians in Palestine, with his treatise on jihad, urging him to continue this war vigorously. He was appointed judge of the army and judge of Jerusalem. After Saladin’s death Baha’ al-Din remained the friend of his son Malik azZahir, who appointed him judge of Aleppo. After Malik az-Zahir’s death his son was a minor. Baha-al-Din had the chief power in the regency. Baha’ al-Din’s most important work is his biography of Saladin.
