Over de kunstenaar

Erik Andriesse (Bussum 1957- Amsterdam 1993) reached the age of only 36. But in his short career the ambitious young artist made a deep impression and a fascinating oeuvre.
By the age of fifteen, when Andriesse had his first gallery exhibition, he was already labelled as a prodigy. When Andriesse attended Ateliers 63 in Haarlem (1975-1977) he spends a brief period creating abstract compositions. But figurative forms soon revealed his true fascination: portraying nature as it appeared to him. Andriesse always regarded nature as his greatest teacher. For him the visual experience was essential. His favourite subjects are skulls, animal skeletons and flowers. Especially sunflowers and amaryllises are among his most beloved. He paints them with passionate vitality and flamboyant colours. The paint is usually dripping and splashing off his canvases, which provide a great dynamic. He found inspiration in the work of Picasso, Dürer and Verster, but also sought to measure himself against them. In 1988 Andriesse won the Prix de Rome. His work is represented in various museums, galleries, organizations and corporate art collections.
