Frans van Damme was a Belgian painter who was born in Hamme on 19 July 1858, he died in Brussels on 30 April 1925. In 1885 he was appointed a professor at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen and in 1887 he studied at the Academie in Brussels. He was honoured with the Prix de Rome and was awarded various golden medals in Tunis, Paris and Saint Petersburg. His work is related to the work of Louis Artan. His studio in Zeebrugge was destroyed due to a bombardment in 1914. He was imprisoned by the Germans for a year during the war. He died in the Pachecho-hospitaal in Brussels on 30 April 1925.
