About the artist

Georges Akopian (Bakou/France, 1912-1971), was a painter, draftsman, engraver and decorative designer. He was born in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, then part of the Russian Empire. According to the literature, he was of Armenian descent.

He came to France at a young age, circa 1920. Before focusing mainly on painting, he designed tapestries, mosaics and large murals for churches such as the St. Jacques church in Amiens (1957) but also public buildings such as the Palais des Festivités in Evian and oceanliners like "Le France".

His paintings had numerous subjects such as nudes, figures, landscapes, animals and buildings, almost always painted from a frontal point of view in bright contrasting colours.
He painted with thick layers of paint and with coloured areas. His paintings are often cheerful, positive and calm.

He regularly exhibited at the Salon d'Automn, the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts (1942-1949), but also at Galerie Bruno Bassano Paris, Galerie Cardo Paris (from 1936) and other galleries in France and abroad.
