About the artist

The Dutch sculptor Gerrit Bolshuis was educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus and the Academy of Fine Arts Amsterdam under the teachers Jan Bronner and Hendrik Adriaan van de Wal. In 1934 Bolshuis won the prestigious Prix de Rome. After a turbulent process Bolhuis was accepted at the Dutch Society of Sculptors ‘Nederlandse Kring van Beeldhouwers’. The sculptor is exemplary for the so-called ‘artists artist’: extremely appreciated by his colleagues, but unknown by the general public.
His quantitative limited oeuvre contains 64 sculptures made out of stone, bronze, terracotta and plaster, small plastics and a few drawings. The intrinsic monumentality is decisive in his work that contains mostly animals and human figures.
