About the artist

He was a pupil of J.A. Daiwaille, J.W. Pieneman and P. Barbiers Pzn. and studied at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten at Amsterdam. In 1848 he became city drawer of Zaandam (an official post). In 1858 he became drawing teacher at the Middelburgse Stad Academie.
He made several trips to Germany and Scotland. His works are mostly landscapes but he has made some village and city scapes. He is considered to be a typical Romantic School painter.
