About the artist

Jean-Babtise-Camille Corot was a French landscape and portrait painter as well as a printmaker in etching. He is a pivotal figure in landscape painting and his work simultaneously references the Neo-Classical tradition and anticipates the plein-air innovations of Impressionism. During the period when Corot decided to devote himself to art, landscape painting was on the upswing. Between 1821 and 1822, Corot studied with Achille Etna Michallon, a landscape painter who was a protégé of the painter Jacques-Louis David. Michallon had a great influence on Corot's career and taught him the principles of French Neoclassism. In 1822 already Corot went to Barbizon, making him one of the first artists to work there. He travelled to- and was active in Italy between 1825 and 1843. He did several paintings for the Salon. In 1829, he came to Barbizon and met the members of the Barbizon School. By the mid-1850s, his increasingly Impressionist style began to get recognition that fixed his place in French art. After his time in Italy and France, he also was active in the Netherlands and Belgium. He died in Paris, his place of birth, in 1875.
