About the artist

Jean-Baptiste Robie was born in Brussels on 19 November 1821, he died in Sint-Gillis on 8 December 1910. He studied under Balthasar Tasson at the art academy in Brussels. Although he first came to public attention for his portraits of Napoleon, he is best known for his still-lifes. His still-lifes paintings are characterised by its faithful use of colour, its clarity and attention to detail. Robie frequently travelled throughout Europe, visiting Italy, Spain, France and Germany. He also went to the Middle East and wrote in India one of his most celebrated travel books called Les Débuts d’ un Peintre (1886).

Robie exhibited at the Brussels Salon between 1843 and 1875 and he was also awarded numerous medals. His work was shown for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1863. In 1880 he exhibited at the Palais des Beaux-Arts and in 1885 at the World Fair in Paris. He was knighted in 1861.
