Joannes Christoffel Vaarberg was a Dutch painter who was born in Weesp on 8 December 1825, he died in Amsterdam on 11 May 1871. He probably studied at the Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He is noted for his historical pieces and genre paintings, frequently lit by candlelight, rather than natural light. Therefore, Vaarberg belonged - along with J. Rosierse, M. Versteegh and P. van Schendel - to the so-called “Nachtschilders” (Nightpainters). He taught J. Hulk jr. He exhibited in Amsterdam, The Hague, Groningen, Rotterdam and Leeuwarden between 1848 and 1871.
