Lie Ping Ping
BiographyAbout the artist
Lie Ping Ping is a contemporary Indonesian artist whose work explores the fragile lines between memory, nature and spirituality. Born and raised on the island of Bali, Lie grew up in an environment where rituals, colours and stories merged into a daily art of living. These early influences still form the heart of his work today.
After studying at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Bali, Lie developed a visual language characterised by a subtle balance between tranquillity and intensity. His installations, paintings and mixed media works are often minimalist in form, but rich in symbolism. Nature plays a central role — not as a backdrop, but as a full-fledged dialogue partner.
Lie Ping Ping is known for his ability to make silence tangible. His work invites you to slow down, to reflect on the unspoken. Whether it is a rice field, an abandoned temple wall or the shadow of a bird, in everything he searches for the unseen that lives just below the surface.
His exhibitions in Southeast Asia and Europe have brought him international recognition as one of the most important voices in the contemporary Balinese art scene. Yet he remains true to his roots: he still works in his open-air studio on the edge of Ubud, where he is inspired daily by the rhythms of the island and the stories of the people around him.
For Lie, art is not a goal in itself, but a way of listening. To the world, to others, and to himself.
