About the artist

Martin Trost (1588, Höxter, Germany-1636, Wittenberg, Germany) studied theology at Wit-tenberg University and took a special interest in oriental languages. He taught this subject at the gymnasium in Köthen, where he published a Syriac New Testament and a Syriac Lexicon in 1621/1622. He became a professor in Rostock and in 1625 he was appointed professor of oriental laguages in Helmstedt. In 1629 he returned to Wittenberg, where he was a pro-fessor of Hebrew. In 1627 he had published his Hebrew grammar at Copenhagen. Andreas Sennert (1606-1689) studied under Trost at Wittenberg and he also studied Arabic under Jacob Golius at Leiden. After Trost's death Sennert returned to Wittenberg as professor of philosophy in 1638. There, he was appointed professor of Hebrew and oriental languages in 1640.
