About the artist
Miao Xiaochun (缪晓春), born in 1964 in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China, is an influential contemporary artist known for his innovative integration of digital technologies into visual arts. His diverse body of work spans photography, digital media, and painting, seamlessly weaving traditional art forms with modern digital techniques.
Miao received his bachelor’s degree from Nanjing University in 1986. In 1989, he completed his master’s degree at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing. His academic journey then took him to Germany, where he obtained a second master’s degree from the Kunsthochschule Kassel in 1999. Since then, he has been a professor at CAFA, teaching photography and digital media.
In the 1980s, Miao began his career as a painter and held his first solo exhibition in Beijing. In the 1990s, his focus shifted to photography and digital media, which led to international recognition. His work is known for creating virtual worlds populated by cybernetic beings, combining classical Western art with futuristic, technologically advanced environments.
One of his notable works is "The Last Judgment in Cyberspace", a digital reinterpretation of Michelangelo's "The Last Judgment" from the Sistine Chapel. In this series, Miao replaces all 400 figures with digital self-portraits, creating a futuristic and industrial scene that contains both serene and menacing elements.
Miao's work has been exhibited worldwide, with solo exhibitions such as "Macromania" at the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz, Germany, and "Out of Body" at the White Box Museum of Art in Beijing. He has also participated in prestigious group exhibitions, including the 55th Venice Biennale and the 7th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane, Australia.
Miao Xiaochun is considered a pioneer in Chinese digital art. His work explores the boundaries between reality and virtuality, reinterpreting traditional art history through modern technologies. His innovative approach has contributed to the evolution of contemporary art practices in China and beyond.
Through his unique combination of traditional and digital art forms, Miao Xiaochun remains an influential figure in the international art scene. His work challenges conventional perceptions and invites viewers to reflect on the interaction between technology, culture, and identity in the modern world.
