About the artist

Pieternella Cornelia (Nelly) Goedewaagen was born in the Dutch Gouda, on August 16, 1880. She was a daughter of Aart Goedewaagen (1850 - 1927), director of ‘Goedewaagen’s Koninklijke Hollandsche pijpen- en aardewerkfabrieken’ in Gouda. She remained unmarried all her life. Nelly studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the Hage and was taught by renowned names as Aletta Ruijsch and Bernard Schregel.

Nelly specialized in city views, still lifes and topographic depictions. She was known as a member of ‘Art et Amicitiae’, the St. Lucas group, and ‘De Onafhankelijken’ in Amsterdam, ‘Teekengenootschap Pictura’ in Dordrecht and the ODIS group of female painters in the Hague. She held multiple exhibitions throughout her life. Nelly passed away on February 16, 1953, in Amesfoort, the Netherlands.
