Pierre-Jules Mêne was a French sculptor and important animalière who was born in Paris in 1810. He would create his first bronze sculptures in his own foundry in 1837. He predominantly made sculptures of domestic animals. His sculptures became extremely popular with the bourgeois class and gained some form of celebrity status that lasted for an unusually long time. He is seen as the cire perdue expert of his time. Pierre-Jules Mêne died in Paris in 1879. His works can be seen in famous museums such as the Louvre and the Metropolitan.
