About the artist

Thomas Struth was born in 1954 in Geldern, Germany, near Düsseldorf. He was educated at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1973 to 1980, where he was educated by Gerhard Richter and Bernd and Hilla Becher.

The first one captured his interest by his early blurred photopaintings, the second names influenced him through a direct and methodically composed photographic sstyle of Germany's industrial landscape. This was partly the reason his attention was turned to photograpy, after an initial affection for painting. He was awarded the academy's first scholarship to New York, where he produced a series of cityscapes.

Because of an abscence of people and motion, his cityscapes silence the overload of sound and movement associated with urban life. He produced similair series in Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Edinburg and other places. In the mid-1980's he produced a series of colour and black-and-white portraits of individuals and groups, in which he tried to explore psychological topics. He has also been making video portraits of one-hour length. In recent years Strutch expanded his interests to natural landscapes, nature studies, monuments and Chinese cityscapes. Struth still lives and works in Düsseldorf.
