About the artist

Willy Schlobach was a German-Belgian painter. His parents were German but he was born and spent his youth in Belgium. In 1884, he was one of the founders of Les XX (Les Vingt), known for their hazy atmospheric paintings. From 1887 on he worked in Londen for a few years. His work was increasingly characterized by Neo-Impressionist influences in this period. In Belgium, he attended the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. When Germany invaded Belgium during the onset of World War I, his pro-German sympathies clashed with the rising anti-German sentiment, causing him to move to Germany where he remained until his death in 1951.
