- About the artworkThe dial
The 8.6-cm silvered engraved dial has Roman numerals and is signed Dumas Sr (successeur) de Gannery No. 111. It has gold spade hands and subsidiaries for power reserve and seconds.
The movement
The spring driven fusee and chain movement has a duration of 56 hours. It has Earnshaw's detent escapement and a split bi-metallic balance with helical spring. The movement has Harrison's maintaining power and the spotted plates are signed Dumas No. 111.
The case
The movement is fitted in a double brass case suspended in gimbals with shock protection. The three tier rosewood case has brass handles and mounts.
Onésime
Onésime Dumas (1824 - 1889) was the nephew of and apprenticed to the famous chronometer maker Henri Motel. He also studied and worked with Perrelet and C.A. Berthoud. He settled in Saint-Nicolas d'Aliermont where he took over the business of Victor Gannery in 1851. Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français, pp. 204-205, 245
Charles Allix noted in his book that Onésime Dumas was mentioned in 1879 in the revue Chronométrique as the most important chronometer maker of France. Allix/Bonnert, Carriage Clocks pp. 99.
