- About the artworkThe serie "Beyond the Living" show trishaw riders carrying passengers, set against the backdrop of a map of different parts of Myanmar. He hopes to highlight the working class and their place in writing the history of this country. The trishaw is a common mode of transportation in Myanmar. Both the trishaw riders and passengers represent the working class struggling to earn a living. Connected by time and money, the riders and passengers embark on their journeys together, carrying feelings of sorrow, pleasure, and hope. Slowly but surely, they are moving forward in their lives.
- About the artist
Zaw Zaw Co was born in November 1984 in Maubin, a city in Myanmar's fertile Irrawaddy Delta. His childhood was spent amid the lush rice paddies and waterways that define the landscape. This natural environment, full of rhythm and seasonal changes, served as a source of inspiration that would later resonate in his art.
As a young talent, he discovered early on the power of drawing and painting to express feelings and ideas. At a time when access to the art world in Myanmar was limited, he forged his own path. He combined traditional techniques with personal experimentation, thus discovering a visual language that moves between figuration and abstraction.
His work is characterized by bright colors, layered textures, and a dynamism that often reflects humanity's inner struggles and hopes. The contrast between stillness and movement plays a significant role in this. Some works exude the tranquility of the countryside where he grew up, while others reveal the intensity and tension of a society in transition.
From his twenties, Zaw Zaw Co began participating in group exhibitions in Yangon, followed by international presentations. He established himself as a representative of a new generation of Myanmarese artists, who are both deeply rooted in their own culture and engaged in a fresh dialogue with the world around them.
Today, Zaw Zaw Co is considered a versatile and innovative artist. His work invites reflection, yet remains always rooted in emotion and experience. In this way, he bridges the gap between the intimate experience of his childhood in Maubin and a universal visual language that extends far beyond the borders of Myanmar.
