  • About the artist

Hein Burgers (full name Hendricus Jacobus Burgers, 1834–1899) was a Dutch painter who spent a large part of his career in France. He gained fame for his refined genre scenes, intimate interiors, and atmospheric cityscapes, in which he managed to capture daily life with great attention to detail and atmosphere.

Born in the Netherlands, Burgers moved to Paris at a young age, where he settled amidst the lively art scene of the 19th century. There, he came into contact with the French painting tradition, which permanently influenced his work—particularly in his sense of light, composition, and the subtle depiction of the everyday.

His oeuvre is characterized by a calm, almost静谧 approach to his subjects. Burgers often painted interiors and scenes from city life, in which human figures play a natural and understated role. His work stands out for its refined use of color, careful brushwork, and a strong sense of spatiality and lighting. Although he worked in France, his style continued to bridge the gap between Dutch precision and French elegance. This combination gave his paintings a timeless quality, in which observation and atmosphere take center stage.

Hein Burgers died in 1899, but his work remains a fine example of the cross-pollination between Dutch and French art in the 19th century and of an artist who managed to depict everyday life with subtlety and craftsmanship.
