  • About the artwork
Oil painting featuring a portrait of a clown. The work was created by Frits Klein (1898–1990), the father of Yves Klein. He was born in Bandung (Indonesia) and moved to the Netherlands with his family at the age of five.

For much of his adult life, he traveled between Paris and Wassenaar. Klein painted, among other subjects, landscape scenes such as beaches and parks, as well as scenes from circus life, in which horses often play a prominent role. His work is characterized by a dreamlike atmosphere. Possible sources of inspiration include Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard, and William Turner. Frits Klein is therefore sometimes referred to as the “painter of light.” Thematically, his work shows affinities with that of Marc Chagall and Giorgio de Chirico.

Currently, an exhibition about Yves Klein and his family, including Frits Klein, is on view at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.

  • About the artist

Frits Klein, born in 1898 in Bandung, Java, was a versatile artist who excelled in various creative disciplines. His artistic talents encompassed painting, illustration, printmaking, lithography, sculpture, decorative painting, and mural artistry. Notably, Klein was celebrated for his mastery of watercolors and pastels.

In the course of his life, Frits Klein forged significant personal and artistic connections. He entered into matrimony with Marie Raymond, and together, they welcomed into the world their renowned offspring, Yves Klein. Frits Klein's artistic journey commenced in Badung, but it was in the Netherlands, beginning in 1913, that he found his footing as an artist, specifically in the picturesque town of Apeldoorn. His artistic pursuits subsequently took him to various Dutch cities, including The Hague and Rotterdam, where he further honed his craft. His dedication to his art led him to enroll at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, marking a pivotal moment in his education.

In the year 1920, Frits Klein embarked on a transformative journey by studying at the Académie André Lhôte in the vibrant city of Paris, the epicenter of the art world. This experience broadened his artistic horizons and influenced the trajectory of his work. Following his time in Paris, Klein relocated to Cagnes, where he immersed himself in creating evocative and dreamlike paintings, reflecting the artistic evolution he had undergone.

In 1939, Frits Klein returned to the artistic hub of Paris, where he resided with his wife. It is worth noting that they were neighbors of the renowned artist Piet Mondriaan for an extended period, a proximity that surely contributed to the rich artistic milieu in which Klein thrived.

The remarkable journey of Frits Klein came to an end in 1990 when he passed away in the vibrant city of Paris. His legacy endures through his extensive body of work, which continues to inspire and captivate art enthusiasts and connoisseurs around the world.
