Hermanus Charles Christiaan Bogman (1861–1921), often referred to as Herman Bogman Sr., was a Dutch Impressionist painter who specialized in landscapes and animal studies, particularly cattle. He was born and worked his entire life in The Hague, thus remaining firmly rooted in the Hague art scene, which in his time was characterized by a strong connection to the landscape and everyday outdoor life.
Bogman found his motifs primarily in his immediate surroundings: vast polders, quiet country roads, and grazing cows, depicted with an attentive eye for light, atmosphere, and seasonal mood. His work aligns with the tradition of the Hague School, in which naturalism and subtle use of color are central, yet simultaneously reveals a looser, Impressionist touch in the way he captured light and movement.
Between 1899 and 1903, he lived for some time in Loosduinen, at the time still a rural area outside The Hague, where he was even closer to his beloved subjects. This period strengthened his affinity with the countryside and produced a series of works in which the relationship between man, animal, and landscape takes center stage.
Although Bogman did not achieve great international fame during his lifetime, his oeuvre forms a valuable reflection of the Dutch landscape around the turn of the century. His paintings are appreciated for their subdued atmosphere, craftsmanship, and their serene depiction of a world that has since largely disappeared.
