  • About the artist

Ruth Brouwer (Antwerp, 7 June 1930 – 25 October 2020) was a Dutch sculptor, medallist and draughtsman, known for her refined sense of form and attention to human stories in bronze and paper.

Born in Antwerp but working in the Netherlands, Brouwer developed into a versatile artist with a distinctive signature. Her work remained close to the figurative, but was never purely academic: she looked for character, emotion and a certain inner movement in her sculptures.

As a sculptor, she mainly worked in bronze. Her sculptures often show human figures, portraits or scenes that have something everyday and something timeless. She knew how to evoke a whole story with subtle gestures and postures, emphasizing the vulnerability and the strength in people.

Brouwer also excelled as a medallist. She did not regard the medal as a static object but as a small, tangible story that you could turn over and discover. Her medals are refined in execution, often narrative and with a sense of detail and relief.

In addition to her three-dimensional work, Brouwer drew a lot. Her drawings have a free, sketchy quality in which her eye for proportions and movement comes to the fore. She saw drawing as a way to capture the essence of her subjects and to explore new ideas for images.

Ruth Brouwer remained true to a craftsmanlike approach to art throughout her life, but without ever becoming rigid or formal. She always sought the personal, the recognizable and the human – in bronze, on paper or in a small format as a medal. In doing so, she built up an oeuvre that has remained intimate, accessible and yet refined.
