  • About the artwork
Almost two thousand years of history have shaped its contours. Tortosa is the city of the first Jewish settlements in Spain in the 4th century! The Almoravids later embraced it with a wall that protected it from barbarian enemies. It overlooks the passage of the Ebro River like a sovereign watching over its subjects. Its 14th-century Lonja stored grain and set its price for the entire Mediterranean coast; Tortosa possessed the pride of its lords and the strength of its river trade, which made it a stronghold.

In the 19th century, Catalan Modernism lingered on its façades and buildings. The Escorxador, its slaughterhouse on the riverbank, is a jewel of the style.
And then the Battle of the Ebro destroyed a large part of the old town. It left behind air-raid shelters, open to the most curious visitors, but the road revolution of the 20th century gradually pushed Tortosa into abandonment.

When the photographer discovered the city, he fell instantly in love and plunged his lens into this world of indifference that is driving this ancient lady toward collapse.
The deserted façades and closed doors speak of an absence that settles like a dusting of memory—an almost palpable abandonment, full of suspended stories. It is in this atmosphere of lack and silence that his artistic inspiration took root. Ausencia is a cry in the face of the wounds of absence.
