  • About the artist

Abel Landry (1868–1923) was a prominent French Art Nouveau architect and designer, celebrated for his refined approach to decorative arts and his ability to create harmonious, total interior environments. Born in Limoges—a city renowned for its porcelain tradition—Landry developed an early sensitivity to craftsmanship and materiality that would shape his later work.

Active in Paris at the turn of the 20th century, Landry became an influential figure within the flourishing Art Nouveau movement. His work spanned furniture, ceramics, and interior architecture, often conceived as unified compositions in which every element contributed to a coherent aesthetic vision. Characterised by flowing lines, organic forms, and a subtle elegance, his designs balanced artistic expression with functional clarity.

Landry’s furniture pieces are noted for their graceful silhouettes and meticulous detailing, while his ceramics reflect both technical precision and a deep appreciation for decorative surface. As an interior designer, he distinguished himself through “total design” concepts, creating immersive spaces where architecture, furnishings, and ornamentation were seamlessly integrated.

Although less widely known today than some of his contemporaries, Abel Landry played a significant role in shaping the Parisian decorative arts scene, embodying the Art Nouveau ideal of uniting art, craft, and everyday life.
