  • About the artist

Jibril was born in Cameroon, where he developed an early interest in drawing at Baptist Primary School. At seven, he sold his first drawing to one of his teachers. At seventeen, he won third prize as Cameroon's "Best National Creative Artist in Collage."

In 2006, he left for South Africa to pursue various creative arts programs, which he successfully completed. He lives and works at August House in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, where more than fifty predominantly young artists still have their studios.

Jibril primarily works with magazine clippings and flyers. His work focuses on exploring the place of fashion in the lives of ordinary people. The people he depicts are usually friends or family, whom he gives a "fashion upgrade," as it were, with styles that are too expensive and unattainable for most of them.

Jibril: "I explore the redefinition of fashion and expression in the lives of ordinary people and of those who motivate them to live life by our own definition."

His impressive collages are highly refined in composition and color. From a distance, they resemble a painting, but up close, you can see that no paint was used. His work is also recognizable by the narrow horizontal, vertical, or diagonal strips he always incorporates into his collages.

Jibril could rightly be called a collage virtuoso.
