  • About the artist

Jos Out’s work is constantly exploratory. She learns from making a sculpture and becomes fascinated by each creative process that is always different. For her, artistic creation begins with probing: what material does she use, and what does she want to say with it? How much space does a stone offer? For Jos, sculpting means giving shape by removing material. "Something that has been cut away cannot be retrieved; in that sense, sculpting is confrontational – every action has consequences," she says.

In her work, Jos tries to express the concept of polarity, as an essential part of our existence. She emphasizes the softness of the sculpture in relation to the hardness of the materials used. According to her, there is no facet of life that can be imagined without opposites: day without night, black without white. Knowledge only has value if it has also been experienced.

Jos Out completed the four-year training at the Vrije Academie Beeldhouw Kunst (VABK) and is also trained as an artistic counselor. In addition, she followed various courses and internships at home and abroad, including South Africa (Neue Bethesda) and Italy (Pietrasanta). Every year she works in Italy for several months to further develop her artistic skills.
